Summer Reading Assignments

Embarking on the Advanced Level English route is exciting and challenging! The activities in the Advanced Level English course are rigorous and designed to help you grow and build a stronger foundation of writing, reading, and analyzing different texts. In order to do your best in this course, you must complete the following readings and assignments. There will be tests the very first day of school on all of these books, so come to class prepared (having attentively read the books). You must also bring your books to class the first day of school.

PLEAE BE AWARE THAT FAILURE TO COMPLETE THE SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS WILL AFFECT YOUR GRADE IN THIS COURSE FOR THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR.

Assignment – Step One:

Purchase your own copy and read the following books:

The Giver by Lois Lowry

The Pearl by John Steinbeck

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

Assignment – Step Two:

While reading each book, you will write down annotations in the margins of the pages. Your annotations as of now will only consist of short plot summary notes.  You will write these annotations at the top or bottom of every 2-3 pages.

Example plot summary annotation on page 8 of Speak:

Melinda gets hit by potatoes. Humiliating!

Assignment – Step Three:

As you read, circle any words you do not know the definition (denotation) of.

Then look them up and write a very brief definition next to the word in the book.

**Reminder: All assignments should be completed and brought to school ON THE VERY FIRST DAY OR THEY WILL BE COUNTED LATE.**

NO MATTER WHAT SEMESTER YOU HAVE THIS CLASS,  ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL YOU STILL MUST STOP BY YOUR ENGLISH TEACHER’S ROOM TO TURN IN BOOKS AND TAKE THE TESTS.
